The Houston Museum of Natural Science has been a powerful force for science education in Houston for 100 years – and we need your help to meet the community’s escalating demand for thought-provoking exhibitions and informative educational programs.

Over the course of the last three decades, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has continually invested in improved and expanded facilities, allowing the Museum to keep pace with Houston’s rapid growth and meet the ever-increasing demand for our educational programs and exhibitions.

Now, the Museum is once again facing capacity issues that severely limit our ability to fulfill our educational mission and meet the burgeoning demand for Museum programs in a responsive and flourishing Houston community. The Museum was built to accommodate 200,000 visitors a year. We currently host 500,000 schoolchildren annually—in addition to more than 2.5 million other visitors.

The HMNS@100: Building for a Second Century of Science capital campaign is designed to provide funding for additions to the Museum’s facilities that will better accommodate both our swelling numbers of visitors and the community’s escalating interest in thought-provoking exhibitions and informative educational programs.

The expansion plan will add a direly needed 115,000 square feet in combined exhibition, education and classroom space - effectively doubling the number of classrooms available for educational programs; doubling the amount of public exhibition space that will be available for temporary and permanent installations; and tripling the amount of available collections storage space, to ensure the conservation and care of our collections for decades to come.
